I was saddened to hear of the death of a creel fisherman after an incident off the Banffshire coast last week.

 

Media reports suggested that a fellow fisherman had alerted the emergency services after the man fell into the water near Macduff.

I was pleased to welcome another UK Government Minister to the constituency recently.  Guy Opperman, Minister in the Department of Work and Pensions, visited the Job Centre in Banff to see  for himself how the area was adjusting to Universal Credit which had been introduced here in June.

The increase in landing volumes last year, reported in the Scottish Sea Fisheries Statistics, ties in with what I have been hearing from fishermen in my constituency.

This is despite the fact UK boats currently only get to land 40% of the fish in our own waters.

I am pleased a deal has been reached to bring an end to the skirmishes between French and British fishermen in the Channel, which will be a relief to many fishermen here who were forced to return home empty-handed following recent clashes in the Channel.
