MP highlights North-East – Japan connections on anniversary of Thomas Glover’s birth
Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has highlighted the strong links between Japan and the north east on the 191st anniversary of Thomas Blake Glover’s birth on 6 June.
Glover, born in Fraserburgh on 6 June, 1838 is credited with being a founding father of the industrial age in Japan – including playing in a role in the beginnings of a shipping firm which would grow to become Mitsubishi.
Aberdeenshire Council have planned and contracted a memorial space in Fraserburgh to commemorate the link and promote tourism to the area.
When finished, the council plans for a statue of the 19th century industrialist, artwork and specially designed benches to be put in place.
Scottish Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan David Duguid said:
“Thomas Blake Glover is perhaps one of Fraserburgh’s most famous sons and his role in bringing the industrial revolution to Japan is well known.
“I am pleased to see that Aberdeenshire Council are taking a lead in providing a fitting memorial to Glover’s legacy in his hometown.
“I hope that this memorial will also provide a boost to local tourism and help strengthen economic and social ties between the north east and Japan.”
