This Volunteers Week, I would like to thank every person and group who routinely volunteers around Banff and Buchan.
Of course, this year has been different.
So many people isolated in their own homes - either in isolation with COVID-19 or shielded as a part of a vunerable group - have depended on others to help them with delivery of their shopping, prescriptions etc. Or even just to have a chat on the phone.
Many people in such situations will have family or friends who can look out for them but some don’t.
Myself and my small team in the constituency have been able to help out a bit, but I’d also like to thank those individuals and groups around Banff and Buchan with whom I’ve been able to put constituents in touch when it was needed.
Volunteering is not just about helping people in need - as important as that is. Volunteers also regular work to keep our local heritage and cultural attractions and events going.
One such group, #Portsoy Community Enterprise have won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
This is a thoroughly well deserved award from the organisation that brings us; The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival (although sadly not this year), The Boatshed, Sail Loft, Bothy Museum and other year-round facilities and cultural opportunities for the local community and visitors alike.
Congratulations to all involved at Portsoy Community Enterprise.
David also congratulated Invercairn Gala Committee and North East Open Studio who were each awarded the QAVS, highlighting the great work they do showcasing what the north east has to offer and the boost they give to local tourism.
