Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has urged constituents to avoid visiting each other’s homes in the coming days in a direct appeal for “strict adherence” to Coronavirus rules.
Cases of Covid-19 in Scotland surged to 1,895 today, the highest logged in a single day with 14.4% of tests showing a positive result.
The seven-day rate in Aberdeenshire is 131.7 per 100,000, while in Aberdeen City it is 200 per 100,000.
All council areas in mainland Scotland were placed into level four restrictions on Boxing Day and are expected to remain at that level for three weeks.
Scottish Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan David Duguid said:
“These figures are alarming and show that the virus has spread significantly across the north-east over the last week.
“I have said this before, but I remain very concerned that the risk in Scotland has been understated, which has led to complacency creeping in.
“I would urge everybody, no matter where they are, to follow the guidance and abide by the social distancing and hygiene rules.
“That also means there should be no visits to other people’s homes over the next few days.
“I know people want to socialise at Hogmanay, but this year, we simply cannot afford to do that.
“Nothing other than strict adherence to the guidance can ensure that we get these case numbers down and take some pressure off our NHS.
“There are already calls to stop all non-urgent surgery in Scottish hospitals, and there is no doubt in my mind that operations will be cancelled in the coming days and weeks."
