MP welcomes further decrease in furloughs as economy reopens
Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has hailed new figures that show further reductions in people on furlough as more businesses reopen and the economy begins to recover from the effects of the pandemic.
Provisional figures for June 2021 show a continuing decrease in use of furlough with 1.9 million employments on furlough at 30 June 2021. This decreased from 2.4 million employments on furlough at 31 May and 3.5 million at 30 April. This compares with the overall peak of 8.9 million employments on furlough on 8 May 2020.
In Scotland, provisional figures show a decrease in the number of employments furloughed to 141,500 at 30 June. The number of employments furloughed in Scotland on 31 May was 175,300.
Banff and Buchan has seen a decrease of over 50% from May to 2,100 jobs on furlough, compared to 4,800 in May. This represents an uptake of 5%.
Scottish Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan David Duguid said:
“It is hugely welcome to see that as our economy reopens people are getting back to work and off furlough.
“As restrictions ease, we are able to go out and do more things and open more places and it is right that furlough begins to wind down as we open up.
“The UK Government has provided and continues to provide unprecedented economic support to people in Banff and Buchan and across the whole UK. This simply would not have been possible without the economic strength of our great Union.”
